Bio

Artists Iulia Boșcu (b. 1990, Romania) and Will Gresson (b. 1987, Aotearoa New Zealand) are a collaborative duo, active since 2017. Their practice explores how sound, perception, and control intersect in everyday life, using collage as both method and metaphor: layering, rupturing, recomposing. They engage with the overlooked acoustics of daily life (fragments, background noise, incidental rhythms) stretching them into abstraction to unsettle habitual patterns of attention. Their projects seek to surface the quiet politics of perception, revealing how we construct (and are constructed by) the sensory environments we inhabit.

They draw inspiration from diverse influences and sources, including experimental music, conceptual art, architecture, film, and psychoacoustics. Of particular interest are the political dimensions of listening and how the act of paying attention, which is too commonly overlooked, can be a form of resistance, care, or coersion. Their work has been presented in both gallery and performance contexts, and continues to evolve across disciplines and formats.

without appeal

without appeal was an artists' collective established in London, UK in 2017. Formed in the wake of the Brexit referendum concerning Britain's relationship with the European Union, the platform was initially conceived in response to a moment of national reconfiguration characterized by vicious and disempowering media and policy making. without appeal took its name from Albert Camus' seminal text 'The Myth of Sisyphus.' Initially a tongue-in-cheek joke at their status as newly undesirable 'citizens of nowhere,' the artists adopted Camus' diagnosis as a kind of political position from which to work, utilizing a broad, multi-disciplinary approach.

Projects initiated under this banner were opportunities to explore the framework of the 'arts institution' within the changing social and political landscapes at the time,. Multiple projects were initiated in London, before relocating to Berlin, Germany and finally Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa during the covid-19 pandemic. The conclusion of this project occurred in August 2023 with the intervention 'A Garden to Banish Loneliness' held at Studio 445 on Karangahape Road.

Since 2024 the artists have reverted to working primarily under their given names, with a specific focus on ecological and environmental issues, predominantly through sound.
