As a small, autonomous collective, without appeal is particularly interested in the way arts institutions interact, both with other large scale arts bodies and with individuals. As part of a wider ongoing investigation, we spent 4 days in Venice, Italy this September launching WA003: The Articulated Cage, a free A6 zine/poster released in collaboration with London fashion label Judas Companion.
Undertaken during the closing months of the 57th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, the publication addressed some of the pressures that ultimately led us to launch the collective, as well as exploring what place if any without appeal might have at a larger establishment event like a Biennale. One of the key concerns of our project was the way that branding and other marketing strategies are utilised by the various national representations, galleries and others, and antagonising what relevance these might have to smaller independent organisations such as ours. We see these as central elements of the way in which the institution is 'performed' and codified.
